[When Digivolving] vs. [On Play]: What's the Difference?
Which one triggers? Two effect timings players often mix up
[On Play] triggers when a card newly enters the field; [When Digivolving] triggers when a card is stacked on top by digivolving. When a card has both, which one triggers depends on how the card entered the field. And moving from the breeding area triggers something else entirely.
The basic difference
- An [On Play] effect triggers at the point the card finishes being played to the battle area.
- A [When Digivolving] effect triggers at the point the card finishes digivolving.
- When a card has both, which one triggers is decided by whether the card was "played" or "digivolved."
- A [When Digivolving] effect triggers at the point the card finishes digivolving.
- When a card has both, which one triggers is decided by whether the card was "played" or "digivolved."
Case by case: which one triggers?
- Played from your hand or from a Digi-Egg: [On Play] only
- Digivolved by stacking on top of digivolution cards: [When Digivolving] only
- DNA Digivolution, <Burst Digivolve>, App Fusion: these are all "digivolving," so [When Digivolving]
- <DigiXros> and <Assembly>: these follow the "play" procedure in Chapter 7 of the Comprehensive Rules, so [On Play] triggers — not [When Digivolving] (a common mix-up).

What triggers on a "move"?
Moving from the breeding area to the battle area is a separate action from "playing" (moving = 4-16, playing = 7-1).
- Moving does not trigger [On Play]. A Digimon you raised in the breeding area won't activate its on-play effects when it moves out.
- On the other hand, [When Moving] effects do trigger. Examples: BT24-034 / BT16-082.
- While a card is in the breeding area, [When Digivolving] doesn't trigger either (3-4-5-4: effects on cards in breeding areas can't trigger or activate).
- Moving does not trigger [On Play]. A Digimon you raised in the breeding area won't activate its on-play effects when it moves out.

[When Moving] effects and phase order
Moving is an action of the breeding phase, so the processing runs in this order:
1. Move during the breeding phase → the [When Moving] effect triggers and resolves
2. Only after the breeding phase finishes does the game proceed to the main phase (6-1-2, 6-1-3)
3. At the point the main phase starts, [Start of Your Main Phase] effects trigger and are processed (15-16-13)
In other words, the order is always "[When Moving] → [Start of Your Main Phase]" — the two never mix.

Easy-to-miss points
- A [When Digivolving] effect written on a digivolution card (a card stacked underneath) also triggers the moment the Digimon digivolves into the card on top (inherited effect timing).
- An [On Play] effect that is pending activation can no longer activate once that card leaves the battle area.
- An [On Play] effect that is pending activation can no longer activate once that card leaves the battle area.
Relevant Comprehensive Rules sections
- 4-16-1 (definition of "moving") / 7-1 (playing)
- 3-4-5-4 (effects don't trigger in the breeding area)
- 15-16-16-1 ([When Moving] effect timing)
- 6-1-2, 6-1-3 (phase order) / 15-16-13-1 ([Start of Your Main Phase])
- 3-4-5-4 (effects don't trigger in the breeding area)
- 15-16-16-1 ([When Moving] effect timing)
- 6-1-2, 6-1-3 (phase order) / 15-16-13-1 ([Start of Your Main Phase])
Key point "Playing," "digivolving," and "moving" are three different actions. Even for the same card, which effect triggers ([On Play] / [When Digivolving] / [When Moving]) changes with how it entered the field. Before you act, pause for a beat: was that a play, a digivolve, or a move?
