Digivolution Cost Reduction: Can Multiple Copies Stack?

"Digivolving" effects vs. cost-reduction effects

Put two copies of a "1 of your Digimon may digivolve into ..." effect on the board — BT25-092 Asuna Shiroki, BT6-060 Deputymon — and the question writes itself: can I activate both at once and stack the discounts? Comprehensive Rules 15-8-4 answers it.

"Digivolving" effects vs. normal digivolution

A normal digivolution is a main-phase action: stack a Digimon card from your hand that meets the requirements, paying its digivolution cost.
Effects reading "1 of your Digimon may digivolve into ..." (call them "digivolving effects") are activation-type effects (15-8-4) that execute a digivolution at whatever cost the effect specifies.
- BT6-060 Deputymon: "[Your Turn] this Digimon may digivolve into a Digimon card with the [Three Musketeers] trait in your hand, ignoring its digivolution requirements, with a digivolution cost of 6"
- BT25-092 Asuna Shiroki: "[Main] By suspending this Tamer and trashing 1 Option card from your hand or your Digimon's digivolution cards, 1 of your Digimon may digivolve into a Digimon card with [Three Musketeers] in its text or the [TS] trait in your hand/trash, with the digivolution cost reduced by 1"

The verdict: two copies can't activate at once (BT25-092 Q6435)

With two BT25-092 Asuna Shiroki in the battle area, you can NOT activate both [Main] effects together for a combined -2 (Q6435).
- "Multiple digivolving effects can't be activated simultaneously" (official answer)
- Basis: 15-8-4-1 (activation-type effects are optionally activated by the player) / 15-8-4-2 (an activation-type effect is declared when there is no unresolved processing)

Declare the first "[Main] ... may digivolve," and the second can't be declared until the first fully resolves. If you want stacked discounts, they have to live inside ONE digivolving effect.

Persistent cost reductions DO stack (15-8-2-4)

Q6435 was about activation-type "digivolving effects" — those queue one at a time.
By contrast, **persistent effects** like "[Your Turn] when this Digimon would digivolve, reduce the digivolution cost you pay by 1" all apply together:

Comprehensive Rules 15-8-2-4:
"When multiple persistent effects are activated, they all overlap."

Two sources of a persistent "-1 to the digivolution cost you pay" = a total of -2. This applies to normal digivolutions AND to digivolutions performed by digivolving effects — anything at digivolution timing.

The distinction to make:
- Persistent (always on while fielded) reductions → stack freely
- Activation-type ("[Main] ... may digivolve") effects → declared and resolved one at a time

Combining with "ignore the requirements" (BT6-060 Q6237)

BT6-060 Deputymon's "[Your Turn] ... may digivolve ignoring its digivolution requirements with a digivolution cost of 6" CAN activate together with digivolving effects like P-107 Defense Training (Q6237).
- "Together" means both effects participate in one digivolution sequence — it is NOT cost stacking across cards
- More in the companion column on ignoring digivolution requirements

Relevant Comprehensive Rules sections

- 15-8-2-4 (multiple persistent effects all overlap)
- 15-8-4-1 (activation-type effects: [Main] text)
- 15-8-4-2 (declared when nothing is unresolved)
- 8-1 (digivolution in general)
- 8-1-2-2 (ignoring digivolution requirements)

The checklist:
1. Is the "may digivolve into ..." a digivolving effect (activation-type) or a persistent reduction?
2. Digivolving effects never activate two-at-once (Q6435)
3. Persistent reductions from multiple sources stack (15-8-2-4)
4. "Ignore the requirements" effects combine fine with digivolving effects
Key point "Digivolving effects" (activation-type) and "cost reductions" (persistent) are different animals. Two digivolving effects can't fire together for a combined discount — but two persistent reductions overlap automatically (15-8-2-4). Classify first, then count your discount.
