When Does "When You Use an Option Card" Actually Trigger?
"Use" vs. "activate by effect"; "the card's cost" vs. "the cost you pay"
Effects like BT19-083 Rika Nonaka's and BT25-091 Monica Simmons's "when you use an Option card" trigger in some situations that look identical to ones where they don't. The keys: "use" vs. "activate by effect," "the printed use cost" vs. "the cost you pay," and how links differ — all via Comprehensive Rules 9-1.
The official definition of "use" (9-1-1, 9-1-2)
The two core sections:
- 9-1-1: "Using a card refers to a rule where an Option card's [Main] effect is activated. When using a card, its color requirements must be met."
- 9-1-2: "If an Option card is used, its [Main] effect will activate. Other effects and rule checks don't interrupt the period between use and activation."
So "use" is the main-phase action: meet the color requirements, pay the cost, activate the [Main] effect. "Use" and "[Main] effect activation" are separate concepts — the latter can happen through routes other than "use."

The "when you use an Option card" effects of BT19-083 Rika Nonaka and BT25-091 Monica Simmons do NOT trigger in these cases:
- A [Security] effect activates the [Main] effect from security
- <Delay> trashes the placed card to activate its [Main] effect
- Another card's "activate the [Main] effect of an Option side" fires a dual card's Option side
Reason: none of these are "using" — they're effect-driven [Main] activations (Q5475, Q6433).

Example 2: If the card's own use cost is reduced, no trigger (BT19-083 Q5476)
Rika Nonaka reads "when you use an Option card with a use cost of 2 or higher" — judged by the USE COST value.
- With effects like BT2-099 Glorious Burst or the first effect of BT8-097 Crimson Blaze, the card's own cost is reduced while in hand. Use it at a reduced cost of 1 or less, and you have **used an Option card whose use cost IS the reduced value** (Q5476)
- At 1 or less, the "use cost 2 or higher" condition fails — no trigger
- With effects like BT2-099 Glorious Burst or the first effect of BT8-097 Crimson Blaze, the card's own cost is reduced while in hand. Use it at a reduced cost of 1 or less, and you have **used an Option card whose use cost IS the reduced value** (Q5476)

By contrast, take a printed use cost of 2+ and reduce only "the cost you pay" via another effect — using it at 1 or less still triggers (Q5477).

- So "use cost 2 or higher" holds, and the effect triggers

Example 4: Using without paying any cost still triggers (BT19-083 Q5478)
Use a printed-cost-2+ Option "without paying the cost" (via some effect) and the trigger still fires (Q5478).
- "Without paying the cost" isn't a cost-0 rewrite — it skips the payment while leaving the use cost as printed
- "Use cost 2 or higher" keeps holding

Example 5: Linking is not using (BT25-100 Q6472)
Cards like BT25-100 Iron Slash work both as Option cards and as link cards.
- Q6472: even under an effect that stops you from USING Option cards, you can still pay the link cost and link it to your Digimon
- Reason: "linking a card is not using an Option card" (10-1-1)
- By the same token, "when you use an Option card" effects don't trigger on a link

Key point "Use" and "activate by effect" are different concepts. So are "the card's use cost is reduced" and "only the cost you pay is reduced." And a link is never a use. Same word — "cost" — but the text always tells you which one it means. Read for it.
